Concord Wins Third in a Row with Victory over Bluefield State, 15-2

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team rolled to a 15-2 win over Bluefield State Thursday afternoon in a non-conference clash at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions (19-9) did the bulk of their offensive damage in the seventh and eighth innings as they combined for 10 runs in their final two at-bats.

CU plated five runs across the first three innings as sophomore infielder Anthony Stehlin scored junior outfielder Adam Linkous on a sacrifice fly in the first after Linkous had singled to start the inning. Two runs in the second were a product of stolen bases as junior outfielder Ryan Fralin and junior infielder Nathan Neff scampered home.

A pair of runs came in the third after a Bluefield state (12-18) home run in the top half of the inning as Neff and senior outfielder Evan Webb each recorded RBI.

Speaking of Webb, he scored the first of three runs in the seventh as he came home on a BSC error. The fielding miscue was followed up by extra-base scoring hits from Fralin and Linkous to stretch the Concord lead out to 8-2.

Six of the first seven batters in eighth reached during a seven-run rally for Concord as freshman catcher Chance Davis, Fralin and Neff all had RBI before freshmen infielders Ryan Meister and Trevor Wimmer closed the frame with RBI base knocks to left and right field, respectively.

Seven different Mountain Lions saw the mound on Thursday as they combined to limited BSC to two runs (one earned) and seven hits. Freshman Jonathon Montes picked up his first collegiate win as he tossed a scoreless fifth. Freshman pitcher Sidney Willis and Linkous each struck out the side in their inning of work—the eighth and ninth.

Neff paced the offense by tying his career best with four hits. Fralin and Linkous each added three. Davis, Fralin and Neff all had two RBI.

The Mountain Lions resume Mountain East Conference play 1:00 p.m. Saturday as they host West Virginia Wesleyan.
