Concord Sweeps Glenville State, 6-3, 7-1

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team has now won eight of its last nine games after a sweep of Glenville State, 6-3 and 7-1, Sunday afternoon at the CU Softball Field in Mountain East Conference action.

The Mountain Lions improve to 16-9 overall and 6-2 in the MEC while Glenville State falls to 6-15 on the season and 1-7 versus league foes.

Game 1: Concord 6 – Glenville State 3
Concord took command of the first game in the middle innings as it combined for five runs during the fourth and fifth.

Tied 1-1 through three innings, junior utility Amber Stokes shot a one-out triple to center field scoring sophomore catcher/third baseman Lauren Richardson who had preceded Stokes' triple with a base hit. During the next at-bat, Stokes scored on a squeeze play from sophomore outfielder Dani Bloomingdale.

During a three-run fifth inning, freshman utility Sarah Thompson led off the frame with her third home run of the year. Junior utility Jenna Witt and junior pitcher/outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick followed with a walk and single, respectively, before Richardson brought them home on a double to left field.

Taking over in the circle before the fourth inning, Fitzpatrick kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard until the seventh inning. GSC plated two runs and had the bases loaded, but sophomore pitcher/outfielder Cartney Schoolcraft came in to the get the final out of the game to pick up her second save of the season.

Fitzpatrick improved to 2-1 as she tossed 3.2 innings, scattering five hits and one earned run. Freshman pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson also gave CU a strong start to the game as she struck out five batters and allowed one earned run in the first three innings.

Richardson was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Fitzpatrick also had a multi-hit game with two base hits.

Game 2: Concord 7 – Glenville State 1
A four-run third inning was more than enough for Concord in the nightcap as it won by six.

Up 1-0 after an RBI single by senior utility Kylie Kent in the first, Kent was in the middle of the rally during the third. S. Thompson doubled to start the frame before Witt plated her with a base hit to right field. With Witt and Fitzpatrick on base, Kent ripped a double to score two runs while coming in to score herself on an errant GSC throw.

CU tacked on a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Witt that scored L. Thompson. And the Mountain Lions added another score in the fifth on a Glenville State error that plated Kent.
Schoolcraft picked up where she left off at the end of game one. The Winfield, West Virginia tossed her fourth straight complete game by allowing one run on five hits and striking out five as she improved to 7-2.

Kent and Witt combined for six of the nine CU hits and collectively drove in five runs.
