Concord Sweeps Urbana, 13-3, 2-1

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team took two games from Urbana, 13-3 and 2-1, Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.

CU improves to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the league while Urbana drops to 2-16 and 0-6 in the MEC.

Game 1: Concord 13 – Urbana 3
The Mountain Lions scored six runs in the first inning on their way to a convincing win to start the afternoon.

The first four seven hitters reached base to start the bottom of the first for CU as senior catcher Jordan Clark, junior catcher Jakob Divers and junior outfielder Ryan Fralin all accounted for RBI. Fellow junior outfielder Adam Linkous drove in junior infielder Nathan Neff for the first of his four RBI to conclude the scoring.
Clark, Linkous and senior outfielder Evan Webb added an RBI apiece in a four-run third for Concord as it extended the lead to 10-0. Linkous plated two runs with a single through the middle in the fourth while Webb scored the final run in the fifth after he drew one of his three walks in the contest and later scored on a groundout.

The run support was more than enough for senior pitcher Will Guay who struck out 10 batters for the second time this season in his complete-game effort. Guay improved to 1-2 this season as he allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits.

Linkous led the CU offense with three hits and four RBI. Clark drove in three runs while Fralin added two RBI in game one. Divers collected two hits.

Game 2: Concord 2 – Urbana 1
Sophomore infielder Anthony Stehlin's triple in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to the difference as senior pitcher Troy Beckner followed Guay's effort on the mound with a stellar outing.

Beckner retired the first six batters he faced before a leadoff double came around to score on a sacrifice fly in the third inning, giving Urbana a 1-0 lead.

With just two hits through the first four innings, Concord broke through against UU starter Dylan Whisman in the fifth. Senior infielder Ian Southcott reached on an error with one out. Now with two outs in the inning, Stehlin drove a triple deep into right field, and on an error by Urbana scored not only Southcott but also himself to put Concord up 2-1.

Beckner tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning in his final frame of work.

After walking the leadoff batter—and tying run—to start the seventh, Linkous got a fielder's choice and back-to-back strikeouts to pick up his second save of the season.

Beckner struck out five batters and allowed just two hits and one run in six innings on the mound to improve to 3-1.

CU was limited to four hits in the contest but three went for extra bases including doubles from Divers and Webb.

The Mountain Lions welcome Notre Dame to Anderson Field 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
