GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team scored three first-inning runs as it went on to defeat Mansfield 6-1 Saturday morning at the Sue Morris Complex as part of the MEC-PSAC Mixer.
The Mountain Lions (2-1) scored their three early runs despite not recording a hit. With the bases loaded, senior catcher
Jordan Clark had an RBI groundout before junior infielder
Nathan Neff and freshman outfielder
Josh Adkins each drew bases-loaded walks later in the frame.
Staked out to an early lead, senior pitcher
Troy Beckner dazzled in his season debut by striking out five of the first six and seven of the first nine batters he faced.
Senior infielder
Brett Simmons added to the CU lead with a double in the fourth inning that brought in sophomore infielder
Anthony Stehlin. The lone run Beckner gave up on the day was a runner coming across on a double play that he induced in the fourth.
Junior outfielder
Adam Linkous concluded the scoring with his first career home run, a two-run blast, that scored Clark in the eighth inning.
Beckner's final line Saturday morning was seven innings, four hits, one walk, one run and 11 strikeouts.
Clark and Simmons each had two hits while Linkous' home run gave him two RBI in the contest.
Freshman pitcher
Sidney Willis and Linkous each pitched an inning of scoreless relief once Beckner concluded his start.
The Mountain Lions are slated to open the home schedule 12:00 p.m. March 9 against Ohio Valley.
