Concord Sweeps Bluefield with 28 Runs in Two Games

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team swept a doubleheader from Bluefield State, 12-0 and 16-5, Tuesday night in non-conference play at the CU Softball Field.

The Mountain Lions have won five games in a row and are 13-8 on the season while BSC drops to 4-6.

Game 1: Concord 12 – Bluefield State 0
CU scored six runs in the second—all with two outs—as it cruised to a win in the opening game.

Bluefield State's Lexi Carter retired the first five Concord batters she faced. However, four straight singles plated junior outfielder/pitcher Darby Fitzpatrick and junior utility Amber Stokes, giving RBI to sophomore catcher/third baseman Lauren Richardson and sophomore outfielder Dani Bloomingdale. Freshman pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson put an exclamation point on the two-out rally with her second home run of the season.

Up 7-0 going to the bottom of the fourth, L. Thompson and freshman utility Sarah Thompson both recorded extra-base hits to start a five-run inning. Senior utility Kylie Kent doubled to left field to bring home two runs while Bloomingdale sent a double to the left-center field gap two batters later to plate the fifth run.

The 12 runs were plenty for sophomore pitcher Tara Williams who fired a one-hitter to improve to 2-2 on the season. Williams walked just batters and struck out five in her five-inning, complete-game performance.

Kent notched three hits and three RBI. L. Thompson knocked in three runs—all on the home run—while also recording two hits. Stokes and S. Thompson both had two hits.

Game 2: Concord 16 – Bluefield State 5
Concord scored its most run in over five years as it completed the sweep of its cross-county foe.

BSC found some early momentum as catcher Machaela Short launched a three-run home run in the top of the first.

After the Mountain Lions cut the deficit to 3-2 to start the second, the Maroon and Gray scored five runs in the bottom of the frame to take command. Fitzpatrick doubled off the field fence to drive in two runs while S. Thompson brought in Fitzpatrick on her own two-base hit down the left field line.

S. Thompson was in the middle of a nine-run third inning. After Fitzpatrick singled with one out, S. Thompson hit her first career home run, a two-run shot deep over the left field fence. The rally continued with Stokes sending a home run out to left field to score three more runs in the frame. Already with two RBI in the third, S. Thompson added to her total with a two-run double in the inning.

S. Thompson collected four hits to go with six RBI. Three of her hits went for extra-base. Sophomore catcher/utility Kaitlyn Stewart also notched four hits. Fitzpatrick registered three hits, two runs and two RBI at the top of the order. Stokes also had three hits to go with three RBI.

Freshman pitcher/first baseman Victoria Hanes won her first career game by tossing all five innings, striking out four.

CU plays host to West Virginia Wesleyan 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
