Concord Rolls Past Davis & Elkins, 11-5

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team scored six combined runs in the fourth and fifth innings as it grabbed an 11-5 win over Davis & Elkins Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions (6-1) charged out to a 2-0 lead after two innings as freshman catcher Chance Davis came up with his first career hit and RBI in his first start at CU. Davis & Elkins (0-14) would not be fazed by the two early scores as it rallied to take a 4-3 lead after the top of the fourth.

Senior infielder Ian Southcott started the fourth-inning rally with a one-out double before he rounded the bases on sophomore infielder Anthony Stehlin's RBI single. Senior infielder BrettSimmons followed with a run-scoring double off the left field fence. The next batter, junior catcher Jakob Divers, kept the rally going with an RBI single to push Concord ahead 6-4.

CU carried over the momentum to the fifth as junior outfielder Ryan Fralin and Davis both reached base to start the inning before Southcott came throughout with a two-RBI single into left center field. Southcott would score later in the frame on a groundout.

Senior catcher Jordan Clark launched his first home run of the season as part of a two-run eighth inning before the Senators plated two runs in the ninth for the final margin of victory.

Davis and Southcott each had three hits in the game. Divers also recorded three hits with his first two going for doubles. All nine CU hitters each had a hit or an RBI or both as Concord piled up a season-best 15 hits.

Seven different Concord pitchers combined for seven strikeouts. Junior pitcher Trent Abernathy started the game as he tossed the first two innings, striking out three and giving up one hit.

But, the win was credited to freshman pitcher Max Arbogast who pitched a perfect fifth inning in his first collegiate appearance.
