Concord Advances to MEC Championship with 2-0 Win over Notre Dame

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team scored two goals off corner kicks in the second half of Friday's Mountain East Conference Semifinal as it advanced to its second straight MEC Championship Game with a 2-0 win over Notre Dame at Cline Stadium.

CU faces Fairmont State 1:00 p.m. Sunday for the MEC Championship Sunday back in Beckley.

The Mountain Lions run their winning streak to 13 games and improve to 18-1 on the season. NDC finishes the season at 10-6-4.

Concord controlled the first half as it got off 13 shots compared to Notre Dame's lone shot. The best scoring chance in the first half for CU was a shot from junior midfielder Courtney Wallace that was punched away from the goal by NDC keeper Jordan Pasalaqua in the 16th minute.

Entering the final 20 minutes of the contest, the Mountain Lions had come up empty on seven previous corner kicks, and was denied a goal on a 71st minute corner kick. But in the 73rd minute, freshman midfielder Michelle Brogden served a corner in that was headed by junior midfielder Mira Kontio across the goal mouth form left to right. After lightly hitting the left post, Kontio's goal opened the scoring with her 11th goal of the year.

Eight minutes later, Brogden lofted another corner kick into the middle of the penalty area where sophomore forward Leah Foster was able to head a shot into the back of the net to double the CU lead. It was Foster's 16 goal of the year.

Following Foster's goal, the Falcons had two chances to get back in the game, but junior goalkeeper Katie Maher made one of her three saves in the game to preserve the shutout and the win.

The Mountain Lions outshot NDC, 19-5, for the game as Foster led the way with five shots.
