ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team was unable to hold onto a 43-38 halftime lead as UVa.-Wise downed the Mountain Lions, 87-81, Thursday night at the Carter Center.
The Cavaliers (2-1) shot 53 percent in the first quarter and held a 21-19 lead through 10 minutes of play, and continued to lead 2:13 left until halftime.

Out of the locker room, the Mountain Lions were unable to pull away from UVa.-Wise as the Cavaliers pulled even, 49-49, with 5:41 remaining in the third quarter and grabbed a three-point lead of 58-55 with 1:28 left in the period.
Five straight points by the Cavaliers put them up a game-high eight points, but Concord responded with a 12-4 run to pull even at 67-67, the seventh tie of the game. Guynn and Lundy each hit a three-pointer while sophomore guard
Gracie Robinson got the run started with her only triple of the game.
But the seventh tie of the game would be the final tie or lead change of the night as the Mountain Lions got within one possession of the lead several time down the stretch, but could not overtake UVa.-Wise.
May finished with a game-best 25 points to go with six rebounds and eight assists. Fitzwater and Guynn each scored 18 points as Fitzwater posted 12 additional rebounds and six blocks.
CU shot 49.2 percent (30-for-61) from the field, but the Cavaliers were 55.7 percent from the floor (34-for-61) including 64.7 percent (11-for-17) in the fourth quarter.
Concord will now have a week off with the next game 2:00 p.m. November 23 against Charleston at the Carter Center. Â
