ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team rolled to a sweep of UVa.-Wise (25-9, 25-21, 25-16) in a non-conference matchup at the Carter Center Tuesday night.
Concord (8-15) opened up the match on 10-0 run led by three service aces from senior defensive specialist
Erin Shannon. In the opening game, Concord never looked back as it built a lead of 20-6 on UVa.-Wise (1-20) after a kill from sophomore setter
Imani Rodgers.
The Mountain Lions opened up a similar advantage in the second game as it led 12-5 after three consecutive kills from sophomore outside hitter
Camryn Huber and sophomore middle hitter
Sheridan Herron. But, the Cavaliers climbed back in to tie the second set at 18-18. Still up a point, 22-21, junior right side
Kenzie Coulter came up with one of her team-high nine kills to help CU secure a 2-0 lead.
Halfway through the third game, Concord found itself up just one point, 13-12, but the Mountain Lions pulled away in the third set with a 6-0 run that was keyed by two kills each from senior right side
Lauren Bethel and Huber. UVa.-Wise was never able to get the deficit under six as CU swept the match.
Huber notched eight kills and seven digs. Freshman middle hitter
Amber Hall added five kills and six blocks—apart of seven total blocks for the Mountain Lions.
In addition to the nine kills, Coulter hit a match-best .471. Rodgers and senior setter
Jenna Mounts each had 15 assists. Shannon had 12 digs while junior defensive specialist
Lindsay Maddox was three better with 15 digs.
Concord hits the road to face West Virginia Wesleyan 7:00 p.m. Friday in a Mountain East Conference contest.
