BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team pushed its win streak to eight games with a 2-0 victory over West Liberty on Senior Day at Cline Stadium in a Mountain East Conference contest.
The Mountain Lions improve to 13-1 on the season and 9-1 in the conference. West Liberty drops to 2-8-4 and 2-5-4 against MEC foes.
Junior midfielder
Mira Kontio scored two first-half goals, and the CU defense held WLU without a shot in the first half and just five for the game.
Kontio's first goal came on a double assist as freshman defender
Zoe Belding sent a pass down the right sideline. Sophomore forward
Leah Foster quickly gathered and sent a pass to Kontio who was crashing down the middle of the box for her seventh goal of the season in the 27
th minute.
The second score for the Vantaa, Finland native came on a free kick from junior defender
Alyssa Mahar who chipped the ball into the box from 30 yards away, and Kontio easily headed the ball into the net in the 43
rd minute.
Sunday marked the sixth straight game that Kontio has scored at least one goal. Mahar's sixth assist of the season stretched her lead in the MEC for most assists by a defender. For Foster, she became the first player in the MEC with 10 assists in 2019.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Leah Marsh was forced to make two second-half saves to preserve Concord's 10
th shutout of the season.
The Mountain Lions outshot West Liberty 23-5 and had more corner kicks, 23-7.
Concord travels to Wheeling 7:00 p.m. Wednesday for the start of a brief two-game road trip.
