Concord Uses Late Goal to Get Past Fairmont State, 2-1

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team edged Fairmont State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Junior midfielder Mira Kontio scored for the second straight game as she pushed CU (9-1, 5-1 MEC) out to a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. After receiving a pass from sophomore forward Leah Foster in the middle of the field, Kontio blasted a shot from 25 yards away that hit the top left corner of the net for the game's first goal.

Throughout the remainder of the first half, the Mountain Lions controlled the possession as they had 11 shots in the first 45 minutes while holding Fairmont State (6-4-1, 5-2-1 MEC) without a shot.

The first shot of the contest for the Fighting Falcons came off a corner kick and rolled in the net in the 52nd minute to tie the game.

Over the next 25 minutes, the game featured just two total shots—both by Concord.

In the 78th minute, CU had back-to-back shots, one saved by FSU goalkeeper Taylor Kennedy, and another on the rebound that went wide of the goal. On the ensuing goal kick, the ball went out of bounds.

On the Concord throw in Fairmont State gained possession, but the ball immediately deflected to Foster who was inside the penalty area and her shot beat Kennedy to the left of the goal. The score proved to be the game winner.

However, the Fighting Falcons did not go away quietly as sophomore goalkeeper Leah Marsh was forced to make a save—her only one of the game—off a FSU corner with less than 90 seconds remaining in the contest. On the save by Marsh, Concord's defense was able to clear the ball to give CU the win.

With a goal and assist, Foster now has 20 points on the season.

The Mountain Lions owned an 18-3 advantage in shots.

CU hosts Frostburg State 1:00 p.m. Thursday to start a four-game homestand.
