ATHENS, W.Va. -- The momentum of a 21-8 run in the third quarter could not be sustained by the Concord University women's basketball team as it was clipped by Glenville State, 117-107, Wednesday in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions (15-4, 10-3 MEC) were able to go up on Glenville State (17-2, 12-1 MEC) and lead in the first quarter by nine, 25-16, Â after a score from senior guard
Andreanna Pool.
With less than a minute left, Glenville State tied up with Concord, 25-25, leaving Concord to trail by two points into the second quarter. A layup from junior forward
Madison May tied CU up once more, 27-27. Glenville State was able to run its lead to as much as 14 points, but Concord was able to close the deficit to nine, as the Mountain Lions trailed at the half, 58-49.
Two layups into the third quarter, Glenville State increased its lead to 13, but Concord ran off the aforementioned run to tie the score at 70 with just under five minutes left. Pool keyed the run with three three-pointers while May added five more points.
Tied for the fifth time in the game, the Mountain Lions were unable to grab the lead from Glenville State as it led 87-79 after three.
A layup by May cut the deficit to one point in the fourth quarter, 91-90, but the Mountain Lions could not hold the Pioneers for the remainder of the contest.
May finished the contest with 30 points. Sophomore
Riley Fitzwater had her 10
th double-double of the season with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Pool also tallied 22 points for the evening. Both senior guard
Emily Boothe and freshman forward
Maggie Guynn scored 11 points each for the Mountain Lions. Boothe came close to a triple-double by adding eight rebounds and eight assists.
The Mountain Lions travel to Buckhannon, W.Va. for a second meeting with West Virginia Wesleyan 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
