CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team gutted out a 99-96 double overtime win over Charleston Wednesday night in Mountain East Conference action behind 65 points from senior guard
Tommy Bolte.
The Chillicothe, Ohio native went 25-for-42 from the field and 12-for-12 at the foul line while adding eight rebounds and only committing one turnover. Bolte's 65 points is the most since single-game highs began being tracked by the NCAA. The previous high was by Shorter's Phil Taylor had 62 two seasons ago.
Trailing the entire game, Concord took its first lead with 1:43 left in regulation on a layup by Bolte. Less than 40 seconds later, Bolte put Concord up 72-69 with another bucket. However, Charleston would convert a three-point play to send the game to overtime after sophomore guard/forward
Malik Johnson's shot from half court was just off the mark.
Down by four in the late stages of the first overtime, Bolte made two free throws before stealing the ensuing in-bound pass. Bolte found Johnson for a layup to knot the game at 84-84. A defensive stand by Concord sent the game to a second overtime for the second straight game.
Bolte scored the first seven CU points of the second overtime while UC could only counter with a three-point from Drew Rackley. Holding onto a one-point advantage with four seconds left, junior forward
Trey Brisco marched to the foul line and calmly made both foul shots. Senior forward
Jafar Musa chipped in a late free throw for the final margin of victory.
Bolte's 65 points were the most in a Division II game since 1977, and was the 14
th-highest scoring game in Division II history. Bolte scored 50 of his 65 after halftime.
Senior forward
Simun Kovac chipped in a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds while junior guard
Jair Rodgers added 10 points.
CU returns home for a Saturday matchup with UVa.-Wise at 4:00 p.m.
