WINGATE, N.C. – The Concord University women's soccer team drew 1-1 with Wingate Wednesday night in a non-conference clash at Pride Park.
The Mountain Lions (2-0-1) set the tone early in the game as sophomore defender
Morgan Carmichael sent a shot on goal in the 11
th minute, and 34 seconds later senior forward
Pilar Elias scored her third goal of the season off a feed from sophomore midfielder
Sarah Hill to give Concord a 1-0 lead on the Bulldogs (2-0-1).
Later in the first half, sophomore midfielder
Elisha Robinson hit the crossbar and fellow sophomore midfielder
Yasmin Mosby had an attempt blocked down. CU settled for a 1-0 halftime lead as it controlled a large portion of the play.
After neither team could grab momentum early in the second half, Wingate began to push forward and apply pressure to the CU defense. Sophomore goalkeeper
Katie Maher made saves in the 70
th and 72
nd minute to preserve the 1-0 lead, but a chipped in goal in the final 90 seconds of regulation sent the contest to overtime.
Maher was forced into making two saves in the first overtime period while freshman forward
Leah Foster put a shot on target, but it was saved. More action at the goal ensued in the second overtime.
A foul on CU inside the penalty area in the 104
th minute gave WU a chance to win the game, however, the penalty try clanged off the right post. After Concord seized control momentarily that included a shot by sophomore midfielder
Nina Perry, the Bulldogs countered with another near chance to win the contest. A shot was sent towards goal, but senior defender
Joanna Aiello cleared the ball right before it crossed the goal line to keep the game tied, 1-1.
One final attempt by WU went wide in the final 20 seconds of double overtime.
Maher made eight saves in the contest. Foster paced CU with two of its six shots on goal.
Concord starts the Mountain East Conference slate with a matchup at Shepherd 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
