Concord Draws with Urbana, 1-1

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team tied 1-1 with Urbana Wednesday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.

Neither team could break through in the first half as sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Brown was called upon to make four saves in the first 45 minutes of the game.

After both teams had chances early in the second half, Concord pressured Urbana into earning a corner kick in the 59th minute. On the ensuing corner, junior midfielder Courtney Skerritt served a ball onto the foot of freshman defender Bruno Baptista who tapped it over to senior midfielder Matt Henderson for Henderson's second career goal.

The next shot in the game would be Urbana's game-tying score in the 64th minute as UU's Evan Williams sent a goal past Brown from the top left corner of the 18-yard penalty box.

Freshman forward Daniel Culverwell nearly scored with less than 10 minutes left in regulation, but his attempt went wide of the goal mouth. With the game deadlocked at 1-1, the contest headed for overtime.

In the first overtime session, Brown was forced to make one of his career-high nine saves in the 98th minute. And sophomore midfielder Moulay Hassani sent a potential game-winning goal whistling past the post with eight seconds left in the first overtime.

The only chance for CU in the second overtime segment was shot by Baptista that was fetched by UU goalkeeper Jakob Henriksen in the 105th minute. Brown made two more saves in the final five minutes to keep the game at a 1-1 draw.

Baptista had two of Concord's four shots on goal.

The teams combined for 34 shots with 13 being on goal.

The Mountain Lions owned a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

CU heads to Shepherd 12:00 p.m. Sunday for an MEC contest.
