BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team fell in its opening game of the Mountain East Conference Tournament, 9-0, to West Liberty Thursday night at Epling Stadium.
The Hilltoppers (21-26) scored seven runs in the fourth inning for the difference in the game.
Concord (26-22) starter, junior pitcher
Troy Beckner, struck out five batters in the first two innings including striking out the side in the second to keep WLU off the scoreboard. However, West Liberty came up with an RBI single in the third before Beckner stranded the bases loaded with his sixth punchout of the contest.
After recording the first out in the fourth, five straight WLU batters reached on just two hits in the frame. Six of the seven runs during the rally were unearned against Beckner as an error was committed by CU in the outfield.
Meanwhile, West Liberty starter Justin Retzer tossed a complete game shutout as he struck out nine and gave up three hits.
Junior catcher / outfielder
Jordan Clark had two hits including his eighth double of the season.
Freshman pitcher
Logan Morrison tossed the final four innings for the Mountain Lions as he struck out a career-best 12 WLU hitters. Beckner allowed two earned runs on five hits to go along with six strikeouts.
The Mountain Lions face Shepherd 3:30 p.m. Friday at the MEC Tournament in what will be an elimination game for Concord.
