ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team outslugged Bluefield State Tuesday afternoon at Anderson Field as it won 9-6 in a non-conference game.
Although Bluefield State (17-19) collected 15 hits to CU's (24-19) 13, the Mountain Lions recorded seven extra base hits.
Senior infielder
Chad Frazier led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right center field to give Concord a 1-0 lead. BSC battled back to take its only lead of the game, 2-1, with two scores in the top of the second.
Sophomore outfielder
Adam Linkous sparked a three-run rally in the third with a two-RBI triple, and later scored in the frame on a wild pitch. However, in the top of the third the Blues plated two runs to knot the game at 4-4.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth when junior infielder
Trevor Wiersma sent his sixth home run of the season over the right field fence to push Concord out in front 5-4. Once again, Bluefield State answered with a run in the seventh to tie the contest.
But, in the bottom of the seventh Concord took the lead for good. Wiersma came up with his third RBI of the day—a line drive double to right field that brought in Linkous. Wiersma would race home later in the inning on a throwing error by BSC's center fielder.
The Mountain Lions added two insurance runs in the eighth. Sophomore infielder
Jakob Divers led off the inning with a single before Frazier sent his second home run of the game over the left field fence to extend CU's lead to 9-5.
Bluefield State plated a run in the top of the ninth, but sophomore pitcher
Trent Abernathy struck out the potential tying run to end the game.
Wiersma accounted for three extra-base hits while Frazier had his first career multi-home run game. Linkous' triple and a three-base hit by junior outfielder
Evan Webb were the other two extra-base hits in the contest.
Divers and sophomore infielder
Nathan Neff each had two hits. Frazier and Wiersma had three RBI a piece while Linkous recorded two.
Junior pitcher
James Wood (1-0) picked up his first career win in relief as he tossed the seventh inning. Freshman pitcher
Logan Morrison tossed the first four innings as he gave up two earned runs and struck out three.
Concord travels to UVa.-Wise 5:00 p.m. Friday to start a four-game home-and-home weekend series.
