Concord Sweeps Glenville State, Clinches MEC Tournament Berth

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team completed a sweep of Glenville State on Senior Day and in the process secured a spot in next weekend's Mountain East Conference Tournament in Salem, Virginia.

The Mountain Lions (17-25, 14-18 MEC) won game one 4-0 before taking the second game 8-0 in five innings over GSC (20-30, 8-22 MEC).

Game 1: Concord 4 – Glenville State 0
Senior third baseman Alycea Watson's three-run home run in the fifth gave the Mountain Lions the breathing room it needed to win the first game.

CU's first run came via an RBI double from sophomore utility Amber Stokes in the third inning that scored senior catcher / outfielder Chelsea Shepherd after a leadoff single from Shepherd to start the frame.

In its next at-bat, sophomore second baseman / shortstop Jenna Witt was hit by a pitch and sophomore pitcher / first baseman Rachel Pritchard drew a one-out walk to advance Witt into scoring position. Three pitches after the base on balls, Watson scored three runs with her third home run of the season to extend Concord's edge to 4-0.

The four runs were more than enough for sophomore / outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick who scattered seven hits and struck out two in seven innings for her 11th win of the season. Fitzpatrick recorded her third shutout of the season while stranding 10 Pioneers on base.

Six different Mountain Lions accounted for one hit in the game.

Game 2: Concord 8 – Glenville State 0 (Five Innings)
CU dispatched of Glenville State in five innings in the nightcap as it plated six runs in the first three innings.

Pritchard and Witt each had an RBI double in the first inning as Witt scored on Pritchard's double while Watson raced home on Witt's 23rd two-base hit of the season.

The Mountain Lions manufactured a run in the third as Watson drew her second walk in as many times at the plate, and scored on Witt's two-out single to grow the advantage to 3-0.

Three more runs scored in the third with freshman catcher / third baseman Kaitlyn Stewart drawing a bases loaded walk. With the bases still loaded, freshman catcher / first baseman Madison Bowles lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, and Watson singling to right field to score Fitzpatrick.

The final two Concord runs came in the fourth inning with an RBI double from Fitzpatrick, and a second time sacrifice fly in the game—this time from Stewart.
Pritchard picked up her fifth win of the season in the circle as she tossed her second shutout in 2018. The Wilmington, Delaware native gave up just six hits to the Pioneers as she also paced the CU offense with three hits and two runs scored.

Witt picked up two hits and two RBI while Stewart added two RBI of her own.
