Concord Drops Non-Conference Tilt to Winston-Salem State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost to Winston-Salem State, 13-6, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions (15-14) scored five of the game's final six runs, but fell behind Winston-Salem State (22-14) 7-1 after three innings. The Rams scored in each of the four innings of the game, and added to an 8-1 lead in the sixth with four more runs.

Junior catcher / outfielder Jordan Clark drove his first home run of the season to the opposite field—right center—in the sixth to get CU within 12-2.

Senior infielder Chad Frazier and senior catcher Paul Williams both reached to start the seventh inning and scored later in the frame. Frazier rounded out the bases on junior infielder Adrian Peralta's single while Williams raced in on a wild pitch.

After the Rams got a score back in the top of the eighth, two WSSU errors aided a pair of runs for the Mountain Lions in the bottom of the frame. Junior infielder Brett Simmons began the inning by reaching on an error and scored on a groundout. Sophomore infielder Nathan Neff scored in the rally on a two-out defensive miscue.

Frazier, senior outfielder Oscar Garcia and Neff all had two hits. Garcia, Neff and Williams all had doubles in the contest.

Concord used 10 different pitchers in the game.

Sophomore pitcher McKinley Scott (0-1) was charged with the loss as he gave up two runs in the first inning. Fellow sophomore pitcher Bryson Booher recorded three outs, all on strikeouts in the fourth inning.

CU resumes Mountain East Conference play 4:00 p.m. Friday at West Virginia Wesleyan with the series being moved up a day to Friday and Saturday.
