Concord Splits at Home with West Virginia State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team went 1-1 against West Virginia State Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the CU Softball Complex as it won game one 5-2 before dropping the nightcap, 5-1.

The Mountain Lions are 10-12 overall and 7-5 against MEC teams in 2018. West Virginia State moves to 17-11 on the season and 6-6 in the conference.

Game 1: Concord 5 – West Virginia State 2
Four of the five runs for Concord came in either its first at-bat or last at-bat of the contest.

Sophomore second baseman / shortstop Jenna Witt deposited her fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning that also scored sophomore pitcher / outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick after she started the game with a leadoff walk.

WVSU answered in the third as they strung three base runners together to plate a run and cut the CU margin in half to 2-1.

However, sophomore utility Amber Stokes hit her second home run of the season in the fourth to open back up the two-run edge for the Mountain Lions.

Stokes was in the middle of Concord's rally in the sixth inning. The Swoope, Virginia native followed a one-out single from freshman catcher / third baseman Kaitlyn Stewart with a double to left field. With two runners in scoring position, freshman outfielder / catcher Kayle Starnes sent her own double to left field to score Stewart and Stokes and extend the CU lead to 5-1.

The Yellow Jackets scored a run on an RBI groundout in the seventh, but was unable to get any closer as Concord won by three.

Fitzpatrick finished her ninth complete game of the season as she moved to 7-4 in 2018. Fitzpatrick scattered seven hits and two runs over seven innings while striking out one.

Starnes and Stokes combined for four of the eight hits on the afternoon. Starnes and Witt each had two RBI.

Game 2: West Virginia State 5 – Concord 1
WVSU scored five unanswered runs in the middle innings of the contest to earn a split.

Senior third baseman Alycea Watson started the second with a single, and scored on sophomore pitcher / first baseman Rachel Pritchard's single after moving to second on a wild pitch.

The Yellow Jackets responded with two runs in the top of the third to take the lead.

West Virginia State added a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

Witt had two hits to pace the Concord offense.

Pritchard (3-7) gave up four earned runs in 4.2 innings of work.

The Mountain Lions take to the road for a doubleheader at UVa.-Wise 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.
