ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team knocked in a season-high 13 three-pointers on its way to a 76-70 win over Shepherd Thursday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.
CU improves to 12-11 overall and 8-9 in the MEC with the victory while Shepherd falls to 14-9 and 10-7 in the conference with the setback.
Aided by a hot start from three-point range, the Mountain Lions led the entire half with the exception of the final three seconds after SU hit the final shot of the half to grab a 34-32 lead at the intermission.
Despite being down two points at the break, Concord shot 9-for-20 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Through the first 11 minutes of the second half, the Mountain Lions were either trailing or tied with Shepherd. However, a three-pointer from junior guard
Tommy Bolte ignited a 9-1 as Concord took a 56-51 lead after a free throw from freshman forward
Jyles Webster. Bolte scored six of the nine points with freshman forward
Antonio Patterson also chipping in a layup.
With CU up five points after a layup from senior guard
B.J. Hamlet at the 4:56 mark, the Rams responded with a three-pointer to cut into the Concord lead, 61-59. But, Bolte had a counter as he drained a step back three-pointer to extend lead back to 66-61 with 3:57 remaining in the game.
Shepherd did not go away quietly, however, as it was able to cut the deficit back to one possession two times in the final 30 seconds. CU answered by going 10-for-10 at the free-throw line in the final 2:29 of the game. Webster knocked in two foul shots. Sophomore forward
Trey Brisco added free throws and Bolte was 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.
Bolte tied his career high seven made three-pointers as he scored 42 points on 12-for-26 shooting. The Chillicothe, Ohio native was also 11-for-12 at the foul line and handed out five assists.
Brisco added 11 points. Webster was provided seven points and six rebounds off the bench.
The Mountain Lions welcome Fairmont State to the Carter Center for a 4:00 p.m. tip Saturday.
