ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team held UVa.-Wise to 27.6 percent shooting from the field in a 78-65 win Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center in Mountain East Conference play.
With Saturday's win, Concord secures the nine seed in next week's MEC Tournament.
Concord (13-15, 9-13 MEC) slowly pulled away from the Cavaliers (6-21, 5-17 MEC) in the first half as it built a lead of 20-11 after the first 10 minutes of play.
After UVa.-Wise scored five of the seven points of the second quarter cut the CU lead to six points, 22-16, the Mountain Lions responded with a 15-1 run to open up a 37-17 lead with 2:10 left in the first half. Six different players scored for Concord during the run as freshman forward
Riley Fitzwater converted two layups, and senior forward
Heather Chapman added a three-pointer.
CU led by as much as 21 points in the opening 20 minutes before taking a 39-21 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Mountain Lions led by as much as 24 points after a jumper from senior guard
Danielle Catron with 5:30 left in the contest before a late run from UVa.-Wise for the final margin of victory for the Maroon and Gray.
Concord held the Cavaliers to 17.5 percent shooting from the field in the first half, and Saturday marked the second time in the last three games that CU has held its opponent to under 30 percent shooting.
Chapman and senior guard
Lindsey Overbey led the scoring for Concord with 15 points apiece. Overbey added nine rebounds.
Fitzwater collected her 17
th double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Madison May had 10 points.
Saturday marked the final home game for Catron, Chapman and Overbey.
Concord will face Shepherd 2:15 p.m. Wednesday in the opening round of the MEC Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.
