Concord Falls in Final Road Game of Season at Fairmont State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Concord University football team  dropped a 56-17 contest to Fairmont State in a Mountain East Conference game Saturday afternoon at Duvall-Rosier Field.

Concord (2-8, 2-7 MEC) got on the board after an opening-drive field goal from freshman kicker Luke Walls from 22 yards away that gave CU a 3-0 lead. But the next three touchdowns belonged to FSU (8-2, 7-2 MEC) as it took a 28-10 halftime lead.

The lone CU touchdown of the opening half was a 10-yard completion from junior quarterback Kyle Akin to sophomore wide receiver Tywan Pearce with 3:09 left in the second quarter.

It appeared the Mountain Lions would take back some momentum early in the second half. Fairmont State missed a field goal to start the third quarter and the second Fighting Falcons' possession resulted in the first career interception for freshman defensive back Davon Williams inside the red zone. However, CU was unable to make the most of the miscues by Fairmont State as it remained down 28-10 until late in the third quarter when FSU scored.

A long touchdown run by Fairmont State stretched the lead out to 42-10 before freshman running back Kris Copeland caught his third touchdown of the season and his first since the opening week of 2018. The scoring pass was a three-yard completion reception junior quarterback Adam Fulton.

The Fighting Falcons scored the final two touchdowns of the game for the final margin of victory.

Despite not scoring, freshman running back Josh Maxwell paced the CU offense with 111 rushing yards. It was the Aberdeen Maryland native's first career 100-yard rushing game. He also became the third Concord rusher to go for 100 yards or more this season.

Copeland and Pearce each had 67 yards receiving to go along with a touchdown. Akin was 15-for-22 for 158 yards and one touchdown.

Williams had six tackles and a pass break-up to go with his interception. Sophomore linebacker Dwain Porterfield had a team-best eight tackles and tied for the game high in stops.

Concord wraps up the season next Saturday on Senior Day against Urbana. Kickoff will be at 12:00 p.m. from Callaghan Stadium.
