ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team dropped a 61-52 decision to West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.
After being held to 14 points in the first half, CU (10-9, 7-7 MEC) went on a 15-4 run that drained over nine minutes off the second half clock. But, after the run the Mountain Lions trailed 35-29 with 10:57 left in the contest.
Five different players scored for Concord during the run including junior guard
Tommy Bolte and freshman forward
Jyles Webster each adding four points.
A jumper by WVWC (3-17, 3-11 MEC) expanded the lead back to eight, 37-29, with 10:17 left, but five straight points from senior guard
B.J. Hamlet and a layup from Webster had CU the closest it had been since the early stages of the game, 37-36, with 8:37 to play.
The Bobcats grew their lead back to two possessions, 45-39, with 5:36 remaining before the Mountain Lions scored seven of the next eight points in the game to tie the score 46-46 with 4:02 left. Webster hit four straight foul shots before Bolte canned a three-pointer.
After a series of free throws, Wesleyan gained a 50-46 edge with 3:38. Hamlet was able to pour in a three-pointer on the proceeding possession to trim the deficit back to a point. But, it was the closest Concord got as WVWC made free throws down the stretch to win by nine.
Bolte recorded a team-high 14 points. Webster added his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Hamlet notched 13 points. Junior forward
Jafar Musa grabbed seven rebounds in the game with six of those coming on the offensive glass.
Concord faces Mercer County rival Bluefield State 8:00 p.m. Monday on the road.
