Concord Falls Short Against Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team shot 52 percent from the field, and played nationally-ranked Glenville State tough, but fell 96-85 Wednesday night at the Waco Center in Mountain East Conference play.

Despite losing, the Mountain Lions (9-8, 6-7 MEC) forced Glenville State (18-1, 13-0) to play their second-closest game in the MEC this season.

After CU grabbed a 10-9 lead on a jumper by junior guard Andreanna Pool at the 5:10 mark of the first quarter, the Pioneers finished the quarter on a 14-7 run to carry a 23-17 advantage over to the second period.

With Glenville State threatening to pull away from the Mountain Lions--up 29-19 less than two minutes into the second period—Concord used a quick 9-2 run to climb back into the contest. Senior guard Danielle Catron scored the final five points of the spurt. For the remaining six minutes of the quarter, GSC only led by three possessions until two quick buckets right before halftime gave the Pioneers a 50-39 halftime advantage.

Glenville State led by double figures the entire second half, but a late flurry by the Mountain Lions made things interesting. Down 22 with three minutes left in the contest, Concord concluded the game on a 13-2 run to peg the final margin of victory at 11 points.

Charleston's 69-64 loss to GSC is the only other game that has been closer for Glenville State in MEC action than Wednesday's 11-point win.

Freshman forward Riley Fitzwater tallied her eighth double-double of the season with game highs in both points (22) and rebounds (14). Sophomore forward Madison May added 19 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Catron continued her success versus Glenville State as she recorded 17 points on 5-for-7 shooting and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line.

Junior guard Emily Boothe played a complete game with 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Boothe also picked up three steals.

CU shot 60 percent (18-for-30) in first half to aid the 52.5 percent (32-for-61) for the game.

The Mountain Lions return home to face West Virginia Wesleyan 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
