ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team eased its way to a straight-set victory over Bluefield State Tuesday night at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions improve to 5-9 overall while BSC drops to 0-6 on the season. Concord took the sets 25-8, 25-9, 25-13.
CU scored the first 10 points of the first game as it cruised to a first set victory. Junior middle hitter
Brooke Heck had two kills in the run while senior outside hitter
Felicia Huerta, sophomore outside hitter
Ellie Lawrence and junior outside hitter
Alexi Pranckus each supplied one kill.
In the first set, sophomore middle hitter
Emily Ellis and Heck combined for nine kills on just 12 chances.
The second game went back-to-forth until the Mountain Lions gained momentum towards the end of the set. Tied at 15-15, Concord finished the game on a 10-4 run. Freshman outside hitter
Kerrigan Fritz and Pranckus combined for four kills, and Ellis and freshman outside hitter
Kirsti Pouncy each had one.
Concord scored 10 of the first 12 points of the final game in route to a sweep. Ellis recorded two more kills while Huerta added one.
By holding Bluefield State to eight points in the first set, it was the first time Concord held an opponent in single digits for a set since November 9, 2014 when it held Glenville State to nine points.
Heck finished with nine kills, four blocks and a .529 hitting percentage. Ellis had a team-best 10 kills while hitting .444.
Senior setter
Casey Mandeville notched 19 assists and eight digs in the win.
Eleven different players had at least one kill for CU with eight players rolling up multiple kills for the match.
Concord starts Mountain East Conference play 7:00 p.m. Friday against West Virginia Wesleyan.
