Concord Falls in Four Sets at Winston-Salem State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Concord University volleyball team lost in four sets to Winston-Salem State Wednesday night in non-conference action at Whitaker Gymnasium.

Winston-Salem State (3-3) won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-23 before CU (3-6) climbed back into the match with a 25-18 win in the third set. WSSU held off Concord 25-19 in the final set.

The Rams raced out to an 11-5 lead in the first set and never looked back as they won the first set by 10 points.

In the second set, both teams went back and forth before Concord grabbed momentum after a kill from junior outside hitter Alexi Pranckus and an error from WSSU allowed the Mountain Lions to take a 14-12. But, Winston-Salem State ripped off 10 of the next 16 points to gain a 22-20 and steal the second set.

CU used a run midway through the third set, and this time Winston-Salem State couldn't fight back as Concord earned a win to cut the match deficit to 2-1. With the third game tied at 11-11, the Mountain Lions went on a 10-5 run. The run was fueled by two kills a piece by sophomore middle hitter Emily Ellis and junior middle hitter Brooke Heck.

The Maroon and Gray couldn't keep the momentum going into the fourth set as the Rams won the fourth set by six points after being up by as many as nine points.

Heck finished with a team-high 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .476. Ellis also finished in double figures with 10 kills.

Senior setter Casey Mandeville was one off her career high in assists with 32 in the match.

Concord travels to the NDC Invite Friday and Saturday for four matches. The first match for the Mountain Lions will be 1:30 p.m. Friday against Indiana (Pa.).
