Concord Rallies to Defeat Davis & Elkins, 7-4

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball erased an early 4-0 deficit to claim a 7-4 win over Davis & Elkins Wednesday afternoon at Anderson Field.

Concord improves to 15-14 while Davis & Elkins falls to 6-19.

Down 4-0 going to the bottom of the sixth, CU exploded for six runs in the frame.

The first run came courtesy of an RBI groundout from junior infielder Chad Frazier that scored freshman infielder Nathan Neff. The whole rally started with Neff working on an eight-pitch at-bat and eventually getting hit by a pitch.

With the bases loaded, freshman infielder Jakob Divers connected on a full-count pitch to score junior catcher Paul Williams and sophomore infielder Trevor Wiersma to cut the deficit to 4-3. Two batters later with the bases again loaded after a walk to sophomore infielder Brett Simmons, freshman outfielder Carter Shrewsbury ripped a single into center field to plate sophomore catcher Jordan Clark and Divers, giving Concord a 5-4 lead.

Neff added his own RBI single bring home Simmons to cap the six-run sixth inning. Five of the six runs in the frame were scored with two outs.

Wiersma added an insurance run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to bring Frazier across.

The Mountain Lions used seven different pitchers on the afternoon. From the fifth inning on, just two batters reached base for Davis & Elkins. Sophomore Troy Beckner, senior pitcher Eli Flynn and senior pitcher Austin Southcott combined for six strikeouts while covering the final three innings.

Redshirt freshman pitcher Cody Dooley (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win by pitching a perfect sixth inning.

Flynn notched his third save of the season by striking out the side in the ninth, needing just 14 pitches to do so.

Williams collected three hits while Neff recorded two base knocks.

Divers and Shrewsbury each had two RBI, and for Shrewsbury it was his first two career RBI.

The Mountain Lions continue their home stand 1:00 p.m. Saturday when they welcome West Virginia State at Anderson Field.
