Concord Falls in Two Games at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va-  The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of contests at No. 8 West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon.

Concord drops to 28-26, while WVWC improves to 40-6 on the year.

Game 1: West Virginia Wesleyan 2 – Concord 0
West Virginia Wesleyan provides two timely hits in the first and the fourth to break open a close game.

The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a single from Jessica Rodriguez.

WVWC doubled its lead in the fourth inning after Taylor Barnett hit an RBI double to give WVWC a 2-0 lead

The Mountain Lions pushed to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning after sophomore outfielder Lindsey Stahl singled to right field with one out.

After a fielder's choice and a walk from freshman catcher Calli Van Gorden, the Mountain Lions had the tying run on first base but couldn't push any runs across the plate to
fall 2-0.

The two teams managed just six hits in total, three for each team.

Stahl went 2-for-3 on the day, with senior shortstop Alayna Furr notching Concord's other hit.

Senior pitcher Sarah Herndon (6-10), took the loss in the circle, allowing just three hits in six innings of work.

Game 2: West Virginia Wesleyan 10 – Concord 2
Five unearned runs in the second inning by West Virginia Wesleyan put Concord in early deficit it can't work its way out of.

After the big second inning for the Bobcats, Concord found itself down 6-0.

WVWC added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 9-0.

Concord reduced the deficit to 9-2 in the top of the fifth inning after a leadoff single by senior outfielder Lauren Lewis

Junior third baseman Alycea Watson then doubled to left field to move Lewis to third, before an error by West Virginia Wesleyan allowed Lewis to touch home.

Sophomore first baseman Lauren Blunt then singled home Watson for Concord's other run of the inning.

However, the Bobcats scored one run in the bottom of the frame to secure a 10-2 win.

Furr finished 2-for-3 on the day, while Lewis, Watson, and Blunt picked up Concord's other five hits.

Senior pitcher Allie Reid (12-9), was charged with the loss in the circle for CU.

Concord travels to Glenville State on Monday for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.

The Mountain Lions will play Shepherd in the first game of the MEC Tournament on Friday at 2:30 regardless of Monday's outcome.
