Concord's Late Rally Falls Short Versus Lake Erie

ATHENS, W.Va. – Two runs by Lake Erie in the top of the ninth allowed the Storm to slip by the Concord University baseball team 4-3 Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions (3-10) scored the game's first runs as junior infielder Chad Frazier and sophomore infielder Trevor Wiersma each plated a run on RBI singles in the third inning. Frazier brought home freshman infielder Nathan Neff while Frazier raced home on Wiersma's base knock after stealing second base.

After some traffic on the bases in the first inning, sophomore pitcher Troy Beckner settled in and retired 13 of the next 15 batters he faced including striking out the side in the second inning.

LEC (5-4) was able to push across a run in the seventh and an additional run in the eighth to tie the game at 2-2.

Walks to three of the first four batters in the ninth loaded the bases for Lake Erie. Senior pitcher Nate Werner struck out Nigel Williams to record the second out of the inning, but LEC's Wes Birchmeier snuck a single through the left side on a 3-2 pitch to plate two runs.

The Mountain Lions, however, mounted their own rally in the bottom of the ninth. Freshman infielder Jakob Divers started the inning with a base hit into right field. The next batter, sophomore catcher Jordan Clark reached on an error. After sophomore infielder Brett Simmons and junior outfielder Nico Church pinch ran, both runners advanced on a bunt single from freshman outfielder Ryan Fralin.

Simmons came in to score after junior catcher Paul Williams was hit by a pitch. But, LEC's Michael Stryffeler sent the final two CU batters back to the dugout on strikes to end the game as Concord narrowly fell 4-3.

Frazier, Wiersma and Williams each had one RBI for the Mountain Lions while Frazier had the only multi-hit game for Concord.

Beckner, the reigning MEC Pitcher of the Week, was stellar once again for CU, tossing seven innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits. Beckner struck out five batters in his outing.

Freshman pitcher Bryson Booher (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief of Beckner.

In the contest, Concord picked off three baserunners including two pickoffs from Beckner.

Concord and LEC resume the series 12:00 p.m. Sunday. The teams will play two-seven inning games.
