WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball swept a doubleheader from Wheeling Jesuit, 12-2 and 11-7, Saturday afternoon at the J.B. Chambers Complex in Mountain East Conference action.
CU improves to 12-12 this season and 6-2 in the conference while WJU falls to 2-16 overall and 1-7 versus conference opposition.
Game 1: Concord 12 – Wheeling Jesuit 2
The Mountain Lions plated 11 runs in the fifth inning to turn a 1-0 deficit into a commanding 11-1 lead.
The fifth was highlighted by
Trevor Wiersma's grand slam in the frame, his second in the last five games and his third home run in as many contests. Junior infielder
Chad Frazier, sophomore infielder
Brett Simmons and sophomore outfielder
Evan Webb also had an RBI each in the inning.
Simmons added a second RBI in the sixth inning as he brought freshman infielder
Jakob Divers in on a single after Divers had doubled earlier in the frame.
Game one marked the second time in as many years that Concord scored 10 or more runs in one inning against the Cardinals.
Freshman pitcher
Joseph Lowder picked up his first career win on the mound as he tossed a complete game, adding a career-high six strikeouts.
Divers and Williams each had two hits while freshman infielder
Nathan Neff, Webb and Wiersma had two hits apiece. Wiersma had four RBI.
Game 2: Concord 11 – Wheeling Jesuit 7
Concord's ninth-inning rally helped secure a sweep of the Cardinals as the Mountain Lions scored six times in their final at-bat.
Down 7-5 going to the ninth inning, sophomore catcher
Jordan Clark brought home Frazier, who started the rally with a lead-off single, to draw within one run. After reaching base on a walk, Webb slide in safe on a passed ball to tie the game at 7-7. Divers provided the go-ahead run in the ninth as his single scored Clark after he had moved up to second on the passed ball.
Up 9-7, Williams provided some additional insurance for CU with a two-run double to score freshman outfielder
Ryan Fralin and Simmons.
Senior pitcher
Eli Flynn (3-1) struck out two batters in the bottom of the ninth to earn his third win of the season in relief.
Clark and Williams each had three RBI with each player recording a two-run double. Williams also added three hits. Neff led all Mountain Lions with four hits. Clark, Divers, Simmons and Webb each had two hits as Concord pounded out 17 hits.
Flynn tossed 1.2 innings of relief, striking out two and only allowing one hit. Senior pitcher
Nate Werner started the game, going 4.2 innings with two strikeouts.
