Concord Picks Up Two Wins at Winston-Salem State

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.-  The Concord University softball team earned two victories on the road at Winston-Salem State on Tuesday afternoon in nonconference action at Twin City Field.

Concord improves its record to 8-6 overall, while Winston-Salem State falls to 3-12 after today's games.

GAME ONE: Concord 6 – Winston-Salem State 1

Watson's Big Day Propels Concord to Game One Win

Six RBI from junior third baseman Alycea Watson proved enough for Concord to take game one, 6-1.

The Mountain Lions started the scoring in the second inning, after singles from sophomore outfielder/pitcher Abby Beatty and freshman second baseman/shortstop Jenna Witt.  After a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, Watson laced a double to center field to drive both runs in and give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the second inning.

The Rams chipped away at the CU lead in the fourth inning after a single from Destiny Snipes brought home Sydnee Brown to make the score 2-1 Concord after four.

The Mountain Lions added three more runs in the top of the fifth after Watson launched a triple with the bases loaded into right field to bring home Witt, senior third baseman Courtney Purtell, and sophomore outfielder Lindsey Stahl

An insurance run in the seventh courtesy of a single to center field by Watson brought home Beatty and helped Concord to secure a 6-1 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.

Watson's six RBI tripled her total RBI to date, bringing her total from three in 2017 to nine.

Senior shortstop Alayna Furr notched her fifth multiple hit game of the season, going 2-for-4 from the plate.  Also picking up multiple hit games were Purtell and Beatty.

The freshman pitching duo of pitcher/outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick and pitcher/first baseman Rachel Pritchard combined to give up seven hits and no earned runs.

Fitzpatrick earned her second win of the season while lowering her ERA to 0.70 for the year.

GAME TWO:  Concord 4 – Winston-Salem State 3
Two Runs in Eighth Inning Helps Concord Take Narrow Victory

The Mountain Lions jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Witt doubled to right field to bring home Furr, who lead off the game with a single before moving to second on a single by sophomore infielder Kylie Kent.  CU led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning.

CU extended its lead to 2-0 in to top of the fifth after Kent doubled home Furr.

Winston-Salem State scored a run in the bottom of the fifth and the sixth inning to tie the game at 2 heading into the seventh inning.

Neither team mustered a hit in the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, a single from Beatty plated senior outfielder Lauren Lewis and Witt to give the Mountain Lions a two-run lead with three outs to get.

After Jasmine Holloman singled home Melissa Carillo to bring the Rams within one, senior pitcher Sarah Herndon closed the game with a quick double play after catching a line drive and throwing out the runner at first to help Concord win 4-3.

Furr finished 2-for-4 from the plate for her sixth multi-hit game of the season.  The Lovettsville, Virginia native also scored two runs.  Kent finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Witt finished with two hits and an RBI, while Beatty added two RBI.

Herndon picked up her first win of the season, going all eight innings while allowing just three hits and one earned run.

Concord returns to action on March 8 at King University.
