BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team shot 58.6 percent from the floor on its way to an 88-68 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at the Rockefeller in Mountain East Conference play.
CU improves to 4-5 overall and 2-4 against league foes with the win. West Virginia Wesleyan evens its record at 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the MEC with the loss.
The Mountain Lions raced out to a 26-10 lead in the first quarter with five different players scoring in the first 10 minutes. The effort was paced by seven points each from senior guards
Danielle Catron and
Lindsey Overbey.
Wesleyan came out strong in the second quarter as it was able to cut the Concord lead to 32-24 with 5:51 remaining in the first half. However, CU closed the half on a 15-3 run, carrying a 47-27 lead into the intermission.
The spurt was ignited by two three-pointers from junior guard
Emily Boothe and Overbey. Freshman forward
Riley Fitzwater added four points.
After Concord built its lead up to as much as 24 points in the third quarter, WVWC reduced the deficit to 13 points with a minute remaining in the third. Sophomore forward
Madison May answered with two jumpers at the end of the quarter to push the lead above 15. The Bobcats were never able to get any closer for the remainder for the contest.
May had a career game with 30 points. The Athens, West Virginia native added 11 rebounds and six assists while shooting 11-for-19 from the floor. May's 30-point game was the fifth in the MEC this season.
Three other players, Catron, Fitzwater and Overbey each netted 15 points. Overbey started the game 4-for-4 from the field and finished 5-for-7 including knocking down three three-pointers.
The Mountain Lions held West Virginia Wesleyan to 30.9 percent shooting.
Additionally, CU assisted on 25 of 34 made buckets. Boothe and May each had six assists with Overbey dishing out five.
The Mountain Lions return to the court after Christmas break at Shepherd January 4.
