Concord's Second Half Surge Bests West Virginia Wesleyan, 80-69

Box Score BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – A run midway through the second half by the Concord University men's basketball team gave it a lead it would not relinquish in an 80-69 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at the Rockefeller Center.

Down 46-41 after two Wesleyan (1-9, 1-5 MEC) free throws, Concord (7-3, 5-1 MEC) went on a 15-3 run that span five minutes to grab a 56-49 edge on the Bobcats. The run was keyed by freshman guard Darian Peterson who scored eight of his 16 points during the spurt.

Wesleyan closed to within 58-57, but CU converted six straight foul shots, four from junior guard Tommy Bolte and two from freshman forward Jyles Webster. The Bobcats attempted to make one final run after cutting the CU advantage to 62-58 with 5:43 left in the contest, however, Bolte made two more free throws, Webster hit a layup and Peterson added two three-pointers as Concord began to pull away from Wesleyan in the 11-point win.

The first half featured a tightly-contest game with neither team leading by two possessions. Wesleyan held a 35-32 edge at halftime. Freshman forward Antonio Patterson netted eight of his 10 points in the first 20 minutes.

Bolte finished the contest with 35 points on 12-for-25 shooting and drained all 10 free-throw attempts. The Chillicothe, Ohio native added seven assists and six rebounds. Peterson's 16 and Patterson's 10 points rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Mountain Lions.

Webster tallied seven points and a team-best seven rebounds in the game.

For a fourth straight game, Concord its opponent to less than 40 percent shooting as the Bobcats converted just 40.4 percent (23-of-57) of their shots.

The Mountain Lions concluded the first semester with a home non-conference tilt against Virginia Union 4:00 p.m. Monday.
