ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball was edged by Alderson-Broaddus 72-69 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions (3-3) overcame a slow start and an early nine-point hole as 34 of the final 35 minutes was played within a six-point margin.
Trailing 15-6 less than four minutes into the game, Concord whittled away at the deficit until taking a 31-30 lead over Alderson- Broaddus (4-1) at the 4:44 mark of the first half after a layup from junior guard
Brendon Chevannes.
A-B took a three-point lead, 38-35, into halftime.
The second half featured four lead changes and eight ties.
Still down three with 7:39 left in the contest, freshman forward
Trey Shuff spun in the lane for a layup and the next possession freshman guard
Malik Johnson converted a foul shot to tie the game 57-57 with 5:57 remaining.
However, CU went cold from the field as it missed nine straight shots and Alderson-Broaddus opened up a 67-59 advantage with 1:17.
The cold stretch did not deter Concord, however, as freshman guard
Darian Peterson canned a three-pointer to bring CU back to 67-62 of Alderson-Broaddus.
After 1-of-2 effort at the foul line from the Battlers, senior guard
B.J. Hamlet drew Concord even closer at 68-65 after another three-pointer. A-B was able to get away for a layup with 28 seconds left to open up a five-point advantage.
The field goal was answered by a four-point play by Johnson with 15 seconds remaining in the contest. Now, Concord trailed just 70-69. A-B made both free throws to extend the lead to three.
After a foul from the Battlers, Concord was unable to make either free throw to draw closer in the closing seconds of the contest.
CU's top two scorers came off the bench as Peterson provided 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting. Webster added 10 points.
Sophomore forward
Trey Brisco notched eight points and six rebounds.
