ATHENS, W.VA. – The Concord University women's basketball team opened its first home game Wednesday night by scoring 100 points in a 108-70 win against Bluefield State at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions (2-1) raced out to an early 28-11 advantage after the first quarter. Senior guard
Danielle Catron fueled the early scoring for
Concord as she knocked in 5-of-6 shots including three three-pointers. Junior guard
Andreanna Pool added seven points in the opening 10 minutes.
CU did cool off from the field but hit 11-of-14 free throws in the second quarter as senior forward
Heather Chapman was a perfect 6-for- 6.
The Mountain Lions took a 54-33 halftime lead over BSC (0-3).
Bluefield State was able to trim the lead to 16, 58-42, with 6:49 left in the third quarter. However, Concord finished the period on a 29-8 run.
Sophomore forward
Madison May lead the run with nine of her career-high 21 points. Catron added eight points during the spurt and freshman guard
Keely Lundy buried two three pointers.
For the remainder of the game, CU never led by less than 29 points.
Catron led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting while making 5-of-6 three pointers. May hit all nine free-throw attempts and also collected seven rebounds to go with her 21 points. Pool rounded the double-figure scorers for CU as she tallied 13 points.
Junior guard
Emily Boothe (eight points, seven rebounds), Chapman (nine points, six rebounds) and junior forward
Courtney White (nine points, seven rebounds) all came close to notching double-doubles.
The Mountain Lions shot 50.7% (37-for-73) from the field. It was the first time Concord shot 50% or better from the floor since February 9 against West Liberty.
Concord topped the 100-point mark for the first time since December 4, 2014 when it went over the century mark at Glenville State.
CU opens up Mountain East Conference play at Notre Dame 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
