ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team lost to Bluefield State 87-83 Wednesday night at the Carter Center in a non-conference rivalry game.
After leading by six at halftime and by as many as 12 points in the second half, the Mountain Lions (2-1) were unable to hold off Bluefield State (2-0) in the final 10 minutes of the game.
With Concord leading by 11, 64-53, with 12:35 remaining in the contest, the Blues were able to chip away at the CU lead until taking a 72-71 lead with 5:43 remaining in the game. From there, the game featured three ties over the next three minutes.
Freshman guard
Trey Radcliffe put Concord up 79-77 with a pair of foul shots with 2:46 remaining, but was quickly answered by Bluefield State. After knotting the game, BSC was able to score the next seven points to run the advantage to 86-79 with 35 seconds left. However, CU wasn't finished as it mounted a late rally.
Radcliffe hit two more free throws with 28 seconds remaining, and freshman forward
Trey Shuff put back a missed shot after a BSC turnover to close with 86-83 with 14 seconds left. On the ensuing in-bound, Bluefield State committed a foul that gave Concord a chance to send the contest to overtime.
Radcliffe's wingside three-pointer was the off the mark as CU lost by four points after BSC made a free throw.
Junior guard
Tommy Bolte scored 29 points in 28 minutes as he did not play the final 12 minutes of the game. Bolte scored 19 of his points in the first half.
Freshman guard
Darian Peterson just missed a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds in the defeat. Fellow guard
Malik Johnson added nine points while Shuff finished with
eight points and five rebounds.
Concord starts Mountain East Conference play 4:00 p.m. Saturday at Notre Dame College.
