Concord Defeats Fairmont State, Clinches MEC Tournament Berth

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team earned a 3-0 shutout win over Fairmont State Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Anderson Field.

CU improves to 10-6 overall and 8-6 in the MEC while Fairmont State drops to 4-6-6 overall and 3-6-6 against league foes.

With Sunday's win, the Mountain Lions clinch a spot in the MEC Tournament which starts after the conclusion of the conference regular season which ends October 28.

Concord pulled away from the Fighting Falcons in the second half to claim a fifth straight victory. Freshman forward Sarah Hill tied junior forward Pilar Elias for the team lead in goals by scoring her seventh goal in the 16th minute to push CU in front 1-0. The assist on the goal came from freshman defender Morgan Carmichael after Carmichael dribbled up the left sideline and crossed a ball to Hill.

The next Concord goal came courtesy of Carmichael in the 49th minute. The Fleming Island, Florida native grabbed possession of the ball in the center midfield after some exchange in possession. Carmichael dribbled near the top the penalty area and floated a shot that was mishandled by FSU goalkeeper Shawna Graham.

Freshman forward Sara Bane was responsible for the final score for the Mountain Lions in the 87th minute. Freshman midfielder Yasmin Mosby notched the assist after she crossed a ball into the box where Bane dribbled through traffic and beat Graham on the near side.

Carmichael and her defensive mates of junior Joanna Aiello, sophomore Ali Cook and freshman Alyssa Mahar limited Fairmont State to two shots.

Freshman goalkeeper Katie Maher was forced to stop just one shot for the game.

Meanwhile, Concord outshot FSU 16-2 with seven shots on target. Hill paced CU with two shots on goal.

The Mountain Lions continue their home stand 1:00 p.m. Wednesday against Shepherd.
