SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team dropped an 86-69 decision to Shepherd Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at the Butcher Center.
Shepherd (13-7, 10-4 MEC) used a 13-3 run at the end of the first half to open up a 13-point lead after CU (5-15, 1-13 MEC) used a 24-12 run to climb back in the game midway through the
first half.
The Rams got out on Concord 23-8 with 10:05 left in the first half. However, Concord used a scoring spurt to trim the deficit to 35-32 with 2:58 remaining. Junior forward
Babe Murphy keyed the run for Concord with eight of his 15 points during the run. Senior guards
Michael Sanchez and
Cam Shannon each added three-pointers while senior guard
Aaron Miller also scored four points.
After the Mountain Lions got to within three points, SU begin its 13-3 run over the final 2:58 of the half to take a 48-35 advantage to halftime.
Concord was able to trim the deficit to eight, 53-45, with 17:04 left in the contest after another Shannon triple, but Shepherd ran its lead back out to double digits. Down 70-56 with 8:17 remaining, the Mountain Lions scored eight straight points, but once again Shepherd had an answer scoring seven consecutive points to pull away for a 17-point win.
Shannon earned his first 20-point game of the season by scoring 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting. The Beckley, West Virginia native also tallied a career-high five made three-pointers. Along with Murphy and Shannon, Miller also notched double-figures with 12 points.
Shepherd's A.J. Carr had stellar afternoon with 32 points and 16 rebounds.
The Mountain Lions conclude their road trip 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Glenville State.
