Last-Second Layup Too Much for Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. – A last-second layup by Urbana's DeQuan Abrom was the difference as the Concord University men's basketball lost 73-71 to the Blue Knights Tuesday evening in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.

Down by three with 42 seconds remaining in the game, the Mountain Lions (5-9, 1-7 MEC) worked the ball around the perimeter and senior guard Cam Shannon found senior forward Stephen Thompson for an open three-pointer which Thompson hit to tie the game at 71-71 with 29 seconds remaining.

On the offensive end, Urbana (8-6, 2-6 MEC) drained the clock down inside 10 seconds before Abrom drove down the left side of the lane and banked in the game-winning shot with five seconds remaining.

After a series of timeouts, CU had its attempt at a game-winner broken up on a pass as the Blue Knights hung on for a two-point win.

Concord got off to a slow start, but held the Blue Knights to one point over the final 4:47 of the first half, and took a 35-32 lead into halftime.

Out of the intermission, the Maroon and Gray ran off a 16-8 spurt to build its lead to 51-40 with 14:39 remaining in the game. Five different players scored during the run with senior guard Aaron Miller scoring six and junior forward Babe Murphy adding four. However, UU ran off seven straight points to trim the CU lead to 51-47 with 13:23 left in the game.

From there, neither team would lead by more than seven over the final 13 minutes of the game.

Thompson recorded his first career double-double as he scored 20 points and snared a career-best 12 rebounds. Sanchez added 14 points while Miller tallied 11 on the evening. Along with 14 points, Sanchez had four steals.

Murphy recorded six points and five rebounds off the bench for the Mountain Lions.

With the four-game home stand now over, Concord takes to the road for its next two games beginning with Wheeling Jesuit 3:00 p.m. Saturday.
