INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team surged back from a 2-0 hole to defeat West Virginia State in five sets (19-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-9) in Mountain East Conference play Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center.
West Virginia State (1-11, 0-2 MEC) took the first two sets from the Mountain Lions (5-8, 1-1 MEC) by a score of 25-19 in each set.
In the third set, Concord fell behind 13-9, but CU went on an 11-3 run to take a 20-16 lead as it hung on for a 25-22 win in set three. During the Concord run, junior middle hitter

Ellie Lawrence all had a kill for CU.
The Mountain Lions fell in an early 6-0 hole and continued to trail 20-12 before ripping off a 13-3 run to end the fourth set to force a fifth and decisive set. Concord took advantage of some WVSU errors during the run, but Lawrence had two kills for the Maroon and Gray.
CU used the momentum of the fourth set to win the fifth set 15-9. Sophomore outside hitter
Alexi Pranckus had four kills in the final set while Heck added three kills.
Heck finished a team-high 10 kills while junior middle hitter
Shea Hoffman and Pranckus each had eight kills. Hoffman also added five blocks. Freshman setter
Jenna Mounts recorded 24 assists to go along with 12 digs. Junior setter
Casey Mandeville added 19 assists. Sophomore libero
Erin Shannon tallied 33 digs on the day.
The Mountain Lions open up at home 6:00 p.m. Tuesday against Alderson-Broaddus.
