Concord Falls to Charleston

ATHENS, W.Va- The Concord University men's soccer team was defeated by the University of Charleston 5-1 in men's soccer action on Thursday evening. 
 
Charleston improves to 7-0-0 (3-0 MEC), while Concord drops to 3-4 (2-3 MEC) on the season. 
 
Concord looked to get off on the right foot early, as freshman midfielder Josh Mattson struck a volley from distance that was blocked by the UC defense in the 14^th minute.  However, Charleston capitalized on its fifth shot of the game after Patrick Guier crossed a ball from the right side that Will Roberts headed in from about six yards out. 

Junior midfielder Max Simpson fired a low shot in the 29th minute that forced a save from UC goalkeeper Fabian Veit. 

Charleston added a second goal just before halftime after Gabriel Cabral rocketed a shot into the upper left side of the net from about 25 yards out. 

Sophomore goalkeeper Michael Adedigba managed to keep the score 2-0 after diving to his right to save a penalty kick in the 50^th minute. 

However, Charleston then added a third and fourth goal in the 56^th and 72^nd minute respectively. 

Concord found the back of the net in the 77^th minute after junior midfielder Mahamadou Coulibaly fired a low shot that Veit parried to his right. Jack Garwood was on hand to tap in the rebound for Concord's lone goal of the game. 

The Golden Eagles tallied a fifth goal with three minutes left to play.

UC outshot Concord 17-6 overall, and held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.    

Adedigba made three saves in net for the Mountain Lions.
 
Concord will face a nonconference test when it welcomes Chowan University on Wednesday, September 28^th.  The game will be played in Beckley, West Virginia at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
