ATHENS, W.Va. – Concord University head men's basketball coach Kent McBride has left the school and accepted the same position at California (Pa.), the school announced Thursday.
McBride departs CU after leading the Mountain Lions to an 83-63 record in five seasons on the sidelines. In his final season at Concord, the Mullens, West Virginia native helped Concord win the MEC Tournament Championship as Concord advanced to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament for the first time since 1996-97.
The conference title for the Mountain Lions was the first since 1997.
Under McBride in 2015-16, Concord defeated West Liberty, the number one team in the nation, twice during the season, once during the regular season and in the MEC semifinals. CU became the first team to beat West Liberty twice in a season since 2007-08.
McBride, a 2006 graduate of CU, coached seven all-conference players in his time at Concord including
Mike Boyd,
Terry Hopewell,
Aaron Miller,
Rob Reed and
Jametrius Wade in the last two seasons. Under McBride's guidance, Reed became Concord's first all-region player since the 2007-08 this past season.
"We have had a great five-year run," McBride said. "My family and I are grateful for all the memories and friends we have created here. I wish this program and University nothing but continued success. My wife, Holly, my son, Campbell, and I are eternally thankful for the great support from the Concord family and administration. Although I'll be on the sidelines somewhere else, we will forever be Mountain Lions."
Concord has begun a search for its next coach.
