Concord Drops MEC Tournament Opener to Shepherd

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team fell in an offensive showcase to Shepherd, 14-10, in its opening game of the Mountain East Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday at Epling Stadium.

Both teams came out swinging as Concord's three runs in the first were answered by Shepherd's four in the bottom of the frame.

Redshirt freshman outfielder Jordan Clark and redshirt freshman infielder Trevor Wiersma got the Mountain Lions on the board with a pair of RBI singles in the first.

After combining for seven runs in the first, each team continued to add to the board with Shepherd scoring at least one run in the first four innings and Concord scratched across two runs in the third inning as freshman infielder Brett Simmons plated sophomore outfielder Andy Szamski in the third on an RBI single.

Down 8-5 going to the sixth inning, CU erupted for five runs on six hits to take a 10-8 advantage. Senior infielder Holt Cassada and Clark each had two RBI in the frame while Szamski added an RBI single. However, Shepherd produced a run in the bottom half and retook the lead with a three-run seventh.

Two runs by the Rams in the eighth put Concord in a 14-10 hole. The Mountain Lions had two runners reach in the ninth, but could not draw any closer as they fell by four runs.

CU put together a 17-hit performance as sophomore infielder Chad Frazier led the Maroon and Gray with four hits and a stolen base. Clark and sophomore catcher Paul Williams each had three base knocks.

Six different players notched an RBI for Concord with Clark collecting three and Cassada two.

Sophomore pitcher Damon Frazier (4-6) was charged with the loss in relief, tossing five innings  and allowing six runs (three earned) while striking out two batters. Junior pitcher Nate Werner started the game for CU, throwing three innings and giving up seven runs.

Shepherd was led offensively by Jacob Carney who had five hits in the game.

CU will play the loser of the West Liberty and West Virginia State 11:00 a.m. Friday in an elimination game.
