Concord Combines for 33 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Fairmont State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Fairmont State, 16-2 and 17-7, Friday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.

Concord moves to 12-14 overall and 6-4 in the MEC while FSU falls to 12-14 overall and 3-7 in league play.

Game 1: Concord 16 – Fairmont State 2
Redshirt freshman infielder Trevor Wiersma hit his second home run of the season and drove in six runs as Concord plated 14 runs in the first four innings to win comfortably over the Fighting Falcons in game one.

With two runners on base in the first inning, Wiersma launched a home run down the right field line to get Concord on the board. In the second inning, Wiersma was right in the middle of the scoring as he bounced a two-RBI single through the right side to push CU ahead 8-0.

After a quiet third inning, the CU bats drove in six runs in the fourth inning as senior infielder Brad Sullivan and Wiersma highlighted the inning. Wiersma drove in a run on an RBI double while Sullivan scored senior outfielder Andrew Seigel and freshman infielder Brett Simmons on an RBI triple, his first of the season.

The 16 runs were more than enough for senior pitcher Chris Kelly (4-3) as he scattered 10 hits and two runs while fanning six hitters on his way to his 24th career win at Concord.

Wiersma finished game one 3-for-5 with one home run, a double and six RBI. Meanwhile, Sullivan was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Sophomore infielder Chad Frazier (three), Seigel (two), sophomore outfielder Andy Szamski (two) and sophomore catcher Paul Williams (two) all had multi-hit games.

Game 2: Concord 17 – Fairmont State 7
CU scored 11 runs with two outs in the fifth inning as it turned a 4-2 deficit into a 13-4 lead on its way 17-7 win.

Fairmont State plated four runs in the top of the third to take a 4-2 edge on the Mountain Lions before the eruption of runs in fifth inning.

In the frame, it appeared FSU was going to get out of inning after a lead-off single from Szamski, but then two quick outs were recorded by Fairmont State's Zac Burch. CU proceeded to have 12 straight batters reach base with 10 of them coming on hits.

Simmons gave the Mountain Lions a 5-4 advantage in the inning on a two-RBI double to the right-center field gap while Frazier also had two RBI in the inning. Redshirt freshman outfielder Jordan Clark added to his home run total of four for the season by sending a two-run home run over the left field fence to aid the rally.

Clark's home run was one of three homers hit by Concord in the nightcap as Frazier and Wiersma delivered solo shots in the sixth inning. For Frazier, it was his first career home run at CU.

Friday marked the second time in a game this season the Mountain Lions have scored 10 or more runs in an inning after putting 10 runs on the board in the first inning against Wheeling Jesuit earlier this season.

Frazier completed the nightcap by going 4-for-6 with one home and three RBI. Wiersma was 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Simmons drove in a career-high four runs while Szamski added three RBI.

Sophomore pitcher Damon Frazier improved to 4-3 as he tossed six innings while giving up four runs and striking out two hitters.

The 33 runs Concord combined for were the most in a doubleheader since scoring 34 in a twinbill against Ohio Valley March 30, 2013.

Concord faces Shepherd on the road 1:00 p.m. Monday after the games were rescheduled from Sunday to Monday due to weather.
