Concord Completes 5-0 Weekend at Shaw Challenge

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Concord University completed a 5-0 weekend at the Shaw Challenge by downing Virginia State and Shaw late Saturday night by scores of 9-7 and 9-0 while returning Sunday afternoon to drop Shaw 11-3.

Concord is now 7-2 this season.

Game 1: Concord 9 – Virginia State 7
The Mountain Lions scored runs in the top of sixth inning to retake a 9-7 lead after trailing 7-6 heading into the frame.

Senior catcher Alyssa Morris doubled home junior shortstop Alayna Furr and freshman pitcher / utility Aarron Ward to give CU an 8-7 edge. The next batter, junior pitcher / outfielder Sarah Herndon singled home Morris for an added insurance run.

Herndon was able to retire the Trojans in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to secure a two-run win.

Furr and Morris each had three hits in the game while Morris and freshman pitcher / outfielder Abby Beatty each drove in three runs. Herndon earned the win for the Mountain Lions.

Herndon earned the win in a relief appearance.

Game 2: Concord 9  - Shaw 0
Concord made short work of the Bears as they scored four times in the first inning, once in the second and posted two runs a piece in the fourth and sixth innings.

CU took advantage of some ineffective Shaw pitching in the first inning as Concord had only three runs, but scored four runs. Beatty and each had an RBI base hit while junior third baseman Courtney Purtell recorded a sacrifice fly and Morris hustled home on a passed ball in the frame.

A wild pitch scored Beatty in the fourth while Purtell notched another RBI with a single in the frame as well. In the sixth inning, freshman catcher / third baseman Lauren Blunt and junior outfielder Lauren Lewis had RBI singles.

Herndon pitched a one-hit shutout against Shaw, striking out four batters.

Game 3: Concord 11 – Shaw 3
Concord scored four runs in the third and four more in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

The third inning was strung together with three consecutive hits including an RBI single by Morris. With the two runners on base, Lewis ripped a triple to left field to score Beatty and Morris both scored before Lewis scored as well on a Shaw blunder.

Morris collected two more RBI in the sixth inning while Lewis and Ward had run-scoring hits in the frame, too.

Ward earned her first collegiate win as she pitched six innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out two.

The Mountain Lions will face Bluefield State 2:00 p.m. Tuesday for a doubleheader.
