Concord Drops Two at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team lost the first games of the Mountain East Conference slate Wednesday afternoon to Charleston, 10-2 and 5-2, on the road.

Game 1: Charleston 10 – Concord 2
Charleston (13-4, 2-0 MEC) scored seven runs in the sixth inning to pull away from  the Mountain Lions (11-9, 0-2 MEC) to go on to win 10-2.

Concord got off to a fast start by scoring two runs in the top of the first on a Charleston error. Senior catcher Alyssa Morris and sophomore catcher / first baseman Nicole Neri touched home on a blunder by UC's shortstop.

The Golden Eagles answered with a run in the bottom of the first before taking the lead in the fifth.

Charleston plated seven runs in the sixth, but none of the runs were charged to junior pitcher Sarah Herndon (4-6).

Junior outfielder Lauren Lewis had Concord's only hit on the afternoon.

Game 2: Charleston 5 – Concord 2
UC scored the first five runs in the game to seal a sweep.

The Golden Eagles scored two runs in the second inning before a two-run home run highlighted a three-run third inning for Charleston.

Lewis and Morris both had RBI base hits in the sixth inning that brought around senior second baseman Kristen Rose and freshman outfielder Lindsey Stahl. However, it was the closest the Mountain Lions would get as UC retired the side in the seventh.

Freshman pitcher / utility Aarron Ward allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings while striking out two.

Along with Lewis and Morris, senior outfielder Kristi Benvenuto and Rose each had a hit in the nightcap.

The Mountain Lions will play at West Virginia Wesleyan 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
