BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team fell in a doubleheader against Lenoir-Rhyne, 15-6 and 5-1, Tuesday in non-conference action at Epling Stadium.
CU falls to 5-10 overall while L-R moves to 19-7 on the season.
Game 1: Lenoir-Rhyne 15 – Concord 6Nine runs by the Bears in the third inning was too much for Concord to come back from.
After Lenoir-Rhyne raced out to a 3-1 lead in the second inning, the Mountain Lions answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame as senior outfielder
Andrew Seigel and redshirt freshman infielder
Trevor Wiersma both had RBI singles while redshirt freshman catcher / first baseman
Jordan Clark and sophomore outfielder
Andy Szamski drew bases-loaded walks.
But Lenoir-Rhyne erupted for nine runs in the third inning to go up 12-6 after three innings on its way to a 15-6 win.
Wiersma led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 showing and an RBI. Clark was 2-for-3 with two RBI in game one. Sophomore catcher
Paul Williams had a multi-hit game for the Mountain Lions, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Game 2: Lenoir-Rhyne 5 – Concord 1 (10 innings)The nightcap turned into a pitcher's duel over the first nine innings as freshman pitcher
Troy Beckner went up against a host of arms from Lenoir-Rhyne, but four runs in the 10
th inning propelled L-R to a four-run win.
After allowing a run in the third inning that tied the game at 1-1, Beckner settled in to only allow two base runners from the fourth through the ninth innings. In his nine innings of work, the Roanoke, Virginia native scattered six hits while striking out a career-high six batters.
The Mountain Lions had a great chance to push the winning run across the plate in the eighth, but failed to convert. After both teams went down in order in the ninth inning, the game headed for the 10
th inning.
L-R was able to crack Beckner in the 10
th as Will Thompson led off the inning with a home run before Becker was pulled after a stellar outing that included 114 pitches. The Bears were able to tack on three more runs in the 10
th as Concord couldn't make a comeback in the bottom half of the inning.
Sophomore infielder
Chad Frazier had the only RBI in the nightcap as he drove in senior infielder
Holt Cassada in the second inning.
The Mountain Lions will start Mountain East Conference play by hosting West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit this weekend.
