Concord Defeated at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team was unable to overcome a late surge by West Virginia Wesleyan as it fell in Mountain East Conference play, 78-60, Saturday afternoon at the Rockefeller Center.

The game featured six lead changes in the first 20 minutes as West Virginia Wesleyan (4-3, 2-2 MEC) held a 35-33 edge at halftime. Also in the first half, neither team led by more than five points as Concord (4-4, 1-3 MEC) scored the first five of the game behind a three-pointer from senior forward Stephen Thompson and a layup from senior guard Michael Sanchez.

Out of the locker room, CU went on a 10-2 run to grab its largest lead of the game, 43-37, with 16:49 left in the contest. The run was fueled by junior forward Babe Murphy and senior guard Cam Shannon who each had four points.

The Bobcats fought back and tied the game at 46-46 with 14:49 left. For the next four minutes, each team matched the other in scoring. Tied at 52 with 10:56 remaining, the Bobcats ran off 15 straight points to seize control of the game, taking a 67-52 lead with 5:59 left to play.

Concord would get no closer than 14 points down the stretch as it fell by 18.

Senior guard Aaron Miller led Concord in scoring with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting while connecting on 4-of-6 three-pointers. Murphy also finished in double figures with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field.

CU shot an even 50 percent from the field (26-for-52).

WVWC's Mo Berchie led all scorers with 23 points.

The Mountain Lions travel to Virginia Union Monday, December 12 for a 7:30 p.m. start.
