Concord Defeats Alderson-Broaddus on the Road, 81-59

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The Concord University men's basketball team defeated Alderson-Broaddus 81-59 Tuesday night in non-conference action at Rex Pyles Arena.

The Mountain Lions improve to 2-1 on the season while A-B falls to 1-2.

The contest went back-and-forth over the first seven minutes as it featured four lead changes and two ties. Up 15-14 at 12:42 mark, CU went on a 15-2 run that span over four minutes to take a 30-16 lead with 8:20 left in the first half.

Sophomore guard Tommy Bolte led the run with seven points while senior guard Cam Shannon converted an old school three-point play and junior guard BJ Hamlet knocked a three-pointer.

The Battlers chipped away at the 14-point deficit over the remainder of the half, but Concord led 36-29 at halftime.

CU got hot in the second half, shooting 58.1 percent from the field (18-for-31), as it pulled away from Alderson-Broaddus.

After senior guard Aaron Miller buried one of his three three-pointers on the night at the 13:11 mark of the second half, the Mountain Lions led by double digits the remainder of the game.

In fact, Concord kept its lead above 15 for much of the final 13 minutes.

Senior forward Stephen Thompson gave the Maroon and Gray its first lead of 20 or more, 76-55, at the 1:46 mark as CU went on to by 22, 81-59.

Miller led all scorers in the game with 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Thompson was also efficient from the field as he tallied 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting and also grabbed seven rebounds. Senior guard Michael Sanchez rounded out the CU scorers in double figures with 11 points.

Concord got 23 points from the bench as Bolte (seven) and junior forward Troy Gibson (six) combined for 13.

As a team, the Mountain Lions shot 50 percent from both the floor (32-for-64) and from three-point range (13-for-26). CU limited A-B to 3-for-17 from behind the arc in the game.

Concord opens up Mountain East Conference play 4:00 p.m. Saturday at Carter Center against West Virginia State.
